IMOGEN FORSTER

A shield bug, a stink bug,

flat, triangular, iridescent

in pink and brown, drops

into the wide-open mouth

of my paper garden sack

as I snip and clip.

Three times it tries to climb

up the long blank slope,

and three times it falls in.

I catch it as gently as

I can on the tip of my

trowel, and it flies away.

I’ve discovered there are

over forty of them, in five

families, many of them

considered pests by farmers.

Sometimes a bright green one

will come into the house, lost.

A pest or no pest,

this one was a gift:

a jewelled pillbox

or a glittery mirror-back

for an expensive doll’s

dressing-table.
